Voters in Ham had a surprise canvasser on their doorstep recently when Hilary Benn MP, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, joined Labour's candidate in Ham, Tina Tuohy, for a doorstep canvass.

Mr Benn was asking voters in Ham to support Tina in the by-election on Thursday 3 September 2009.

During his visit to Plymouth Mr Benn also met Labour Party members at a special meeting in Sutton where he asked members to continue fighting for Labour values.

Linda Gilroy, Labour's Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton said: "It is really good to welcome Hilary Benn to Plymouth. It is really important that we have opportunities like this to hear what he is doing in Government and the cabinet and for him to listen to the people of Plymouth about their concerns."

Luke Pollard, Labour's Prospective Candidate in South West Devon said: "Hilary's message to Plymouth's Labour members was not to lose faith and to fight for those values that are important to us - social justice and equality. Hilary's visit also gave members a chance to raise concerns directly with one of the PM's cabinet members ranging from carbon emissions to the direction of government."
