Plymouth Labour Unite to fight Citybus "sell off on wheels"

Plymouth Labour Party activists today launch a city wide campaign to stop the Council selling off one of the City's most valuable assets.

The Conservative-led council cabinet will agree this week to spend up to £940,000 of public money to privatise the company.

Labour Group Leader Cllr Tudor Evans said: "The bus company helps control the price of bus fares in Plymouth. Cities that don't have a council owned bus company have all seen their fares rise much higher than they are here. Pensioners will continue to travel for free, but everyone else will see fares rise. The council will also lose its dividend from Citybus profits, so council tax will rise.

"The Conservatives promised NOT to sell Citybus during the 2007 city council election campaign. It's yet another let down for people who voted Tory in good faith. Its selling the family silver - on wheels."

Over the coming days we will be launching a full-scale campaign to Save Plymouth CitbBus by asking the people of Plymouth to sign a petition to save our publicly owned bus company from being sold by the Tory Council.
